Vecchia TonnaraAvola, near SYRACUSE
At a glance
This white-washed Mediterranean villa is set in a splendid position right on the beach, in a slightly elevated position, with a large terrace at the front to enjoy the views of the water and across to the old tuna fish processing plant (la vecchia tonnara..!). There is a tiny fishing village within walking distance where you can buy the freshest of fish in the wonderful "pescheria" pictured here. Avola is about 23 km from Siracusa and is divided into two sections, one on the sea and the other on the plains. Avola Antica, constructed in the form of a winged serpent was a medieval city on Mount Aquilone, the end of the Iblei mountains. All around are prehistoric ruins with ancient Sicilian oven tombs. The city was destroyed in 1863 by an apocalyptic earthquake and was rebuilt on the plains near the coast. The hexagonal shape of the city was then surrounded by fortifications. Entry to this spacious villa is by large gates from the street through a garden and paved driveway. On the ground floor is a large living room with fireplace, dining area and eat-in kitchen, very well equipped. One queensize bedroom, a bathroom with shower and from here a splendid view of the sea. On the upper floor are two queen bedrooms and two twin bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large terrace on the sea. The furnishings are pleasant and very comfortable. The garden is well planted and the terrace has numerous pots of flowering plants and palms. It is a spacious and comfortable home with no pretences, ideal for a large family or group of friends. |
